Publication_Date: 1996 Title: Roads of Georgia Edition: 1.0 1.1 Datum change from 1927 to 1983 (North American Datum of 1983) Data Re-projected using North American Datum (NAD83) - September 2000 Series_Information Series_Name: Digital Data Series Publication_Information Publication_Place: Atlanta, GA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://csat.er.usgs.gov/statewide/layers/roads.html Scale_Denominator: 100000 Description Abstract The ROADS data layer is a compilation of the 1:100,000 scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) data extracted from the Transportation data set for the state of Georgia. These data have been processed using ARC/INFO ((c) 1996 ESRI Inc.) to create an integrated digital product from both spatial analysis alone or in conjunction with similer data. This data has been internally edgematched within 1:100,000 scale map sheets. No external edgematching has been performed. The data contains only linear features for highways, roads, and trails, and associated infrastructures such as bridges, overpasses, and tunnels. This data has been clipped to the boundary of the State of Georgia using 1:100,000 scale boundary data from U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau, TIGER line files, 1990. Purpose DLG data are digital representations of cartographic information. For more information on the source and accuracy of this data set, see the USGS "Digital Line Graphs From 1:100,000-scale Maps, Data Users Guide 2" available from the U.S. Geological Survey, National Mapping Division. DLGs depict information about geographic features on or near the surface of the Earth, terrain, and political and administrative units. These data were collected as part of the National Mapping Program. Uses: Base map data, or other user defined purposes. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used 1. All of the 1:100,000 optional format miscellaneous transportation DLGs were obtained from the CD-ROM "1:100,000 Scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) Data Hydrography and Transportation - Area 3" for every 1:100,000 quadrangle that contains the state of Georgia. 2. The 8 files for each quadrangle were unzipped with a "-a" option to convert the files to unix format. 3. The rest of the processing takes place using Arc/Info with the first step being to run DLGARC on every DLG file to convert it to a coverage. 4. The 8 different coverages for each 1:100,000 quadrangle were built as a line coverage and the acode file was joined to the aat file with JOINITEM. 5. Each coverage was checked to make sure it had 5 major/minor pairs and if it did not, then the major/minor pairs were added with ADDITEM. 6. The 8 different parts were APPENDed to create one coverage for each 1:100,000 quadrangle. 7. In Arcedit all neatlines, arcs with a MAJOR1 value of 0 or -99999 were selected and deleted and the the quad coverages were rebuilt as line coverages. 8. In Arcedit all attribute value were checked and any that had a MAJOR value of 0 had the value of that and its associated MINOR value changed to -99999 to signify no value. 9. PROJECTDEFINE was used to add a datum of NAD27 to the projection description. 10. Each quad was projected from UTM zone 16 or 17 to an Albers projection with units in meters, a NAD27 datum, a CLARKE1866 spheroid, and the following parameters: 1st standard parallel 29 30 00 2nd standard parallel 45 30 00 central meridian -83 30 00 latitude of origin 23 00 00 false easting 0 false northing 0 11. Each quad was inserted into an Arc/Info Library with a tiling structure of 1:100,000 quadrangles. 12. The final coverage was extracted from the library using a dissolve option and a clipcover of the state of Georgia to create the railroads of Georgia. 13. The existing tics were all deleted and new tics at 1 degree interval were inserted into the coverage. 14. The coverage was documented using DOCUMENT v7.0.4. In addition to the basic DLG processing steps, this data set has been enhanced with the addition of three new attributes derived from the existing Major-minor pairs. A program called fixrd.aml (see NOTES) was used to re-classify and identify road (transportation) data from USGS DLG. The scheme is arbitrary and can be customized based on individual preferences. This is a simplified scheme that establishes a one-to-one relationship between a line feature and its attribute data based on the major-minor pair associations. Each feature is assigned a classification number (ie. 1 - 5), based on the MINOR code associated with the MAJOR code 170. In addition, if other identifying elements are available, they are saved based on a defined priority. These are: Administrative authority (item TYPE) and route number (item ROUTE). Thus, three new items are added to the .aat: CLASS,1,1,I (currently 1 to 5, 1 = Major HWY, 5 = Trail) TYPE,1,1,C (Interstate, US, State, Park or Reservation, County) ROUTE,4,4,I (Route number from MINOR associated to TYPE from MAJOR) The following table shows the classification schema: (classifications in order of precedence) When Then DLG Major = Item TYPE = 172 I (Interstate) 173 U (US Hwy) 174 S (State) 175 P (Park or Res.) 176 C (County) When Then DLG Minor= Item CLASS = 201 -Primary Route, Class 1 1 202 1 203 1 204 1 205 -Secondary Route, Class 2 2 206 2 207 2 208 2 209 -Class 3, road or street 3 210 -Class 4, road or street 4 211 -Class 5, trail other than 4wd 5 212 -Class 5, 4wd trail 4 213 -Trail, footbridge 5 All others 3 Revisions 1.0 Reviews_Applied Colleague review May 1, 1996 by Jack Alhadeff and Thomas R. Dyar. Digital data was reviewed with respect to positional accuracy, contextual accuracy, attribute accuracy, topological consistency, and metadata content. 1. Set Tics to standard set. Done. 2. Revise Citation of original digital data. Done. 3. Add Frequencies to attribute discussions. Not necessary since aml to redefine items: TYPE, CLASS and ROUTE are created from an analysis of the major and minor pairs. 4. Approved by Georgia District Chief, Tim Hale, on May 3, 1996. Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute accuracy is estimated to be 98.5 percent. Attribute accuracy was tested by one or more of the following methods: - manual comparison of the source with hard copy plots. - symbolized display of the digital line graph on an interactive computer graphic system. - Selected attributes that could not be visually verified on plots or on screen, were interactively queried and verified on screen. In addition, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Production System (PROSYS) software tested the attributes against a master set of valid attributes for the category; it also checked for selected valid attribute combinations, and for valid attributes relative to topology and dimensionality. All attribute data conform to the attribute codes current as of the date of digitizing. Logical_Consistency_Report: Topological requirements include: lines must begin and end at nodes, lines must connect to each other at nodes, lines do not extend through nodes, left and right areas are defined for each line element and are consistent throughout the file, and the lines representing the limits of the file (neatline) are free of gaps. The tests of logical consistency were performed by the USGS PROSYS program. The neatline was generated by connecting the four corners of the digital file, as established during initialization of the digital file. All data outside the enclosed region were ignored and all data crossing these geographically straight lines were clipped at the neatline. Data within a specified tolerance of the neatline were snapped to the neatline. Neatline straightening aligned the digitized edges of the digital data with the generated neatline, that is, with the longitude/latitude lines in geographic coordinates. All internal areas were tested for closure using PROSYS. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets Transportation Railroads Transportation Misc. Completeness_Report For Digital Revision Status = Not revised Data completeness reflects the content of the source quadrangle. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic, due to scale and legibility constraints. For Digital Revision Status = Limited Update This file has undergone limited update digital revision. The file contains only (1) those features that are photoidentifiable on monoscopic source, supplemented with limited ancillary source, and (2) those features, present on the original source quadrangle, that can not be reliably photoidentified but that are not considered particularly prone to change. For Digital Revision Status = Standard Update This file has undergone standard update digital revision. The data completeness of this file meets NMD standards for feature content. Positional_Accuracy Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: For Digital Revision Status = Not revised: Horizontal positional accuracy is based upon the use of USGS source quadrangles which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 0.02 inches of the true position. The digital data are estimated to contain a horizontal positional error of less than or equal to 0.003 inches standard error in the two component directions relative to the source quadrangle. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to assess digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibility constraints. Digital map elements require edge alignment between data sets. Data along each partitioned edge internal to the original 100,000 scale quadrangle, and data along the quadrangle edge, are tested against the adjacent data set using PROSYS; tests check for positional accuracy between data sets within a 0.02 inches tolerance. Features with like dimensionality, and with or without like attribution, that are within the tolerance are adjusted by moving the feature equally in both data sets. Features outside the tolerance are not moved. All disconnects are identified by edge matching flags that document the mismatch. For Digital Revision Status = Limited Update or Standard Update: This file has undergone digital revision. Accuracy of these digital data meets the class 1 positional accuracy specifications in the draft United States National Cartographic Standards for Spatial Accuracy. Digital map elements require edge alignment between data sets. Data along each partitioned edge internal to the original 100,000 scale quadrangle, and data along the quadrangle edge, are tested against the adjacent data set using the USGS Production System (PROSYS); tests check for positional accuracy between data sets within a 0.02 inches tolerance. Features with like dimensionality, and with or without like attribution, that are within the tolerance are adjusted by moving the feature equally in both data sets.
