Publication_Date: 1997 Title: 7.5 Minute Quadrangle Index for Georgia Edition: 1.0 1.1 Datum change from 1927 to 1983 (North American Datum of 1983) Data Re-projected using North American Datum (NAD83) - September 2000 Series_Information Series_Name: Digital Data Series Publication_Information Publication_Place: Atlanta, GA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://csat.er.usgs.gov/statewide/layers/quad24.html Scale_Denominator: 24000 Description Abstract The widespread use of USGS 1:24,000 7.5 minute topographic maps for digitizing spatial data, and the availability of data in 7.5 minute blocks necessitates the use of an index coverage. This index coverage contains all of the 1:24,000 quadrangles for the state of Georgia with an appropriate Arc/Info coverage name that can be used for indexing. The 1:100,000 30x60 minute map name is also included for larger indexing. Purpose This dataset was created for use as an indexing coverage to allow data based on or from 1:24,000 7.5 minute quadrangles to be joined and combined into datasets of larger areal extent. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used The dataset "quad24" was created entirely within the software Arc/Info. The following steps were taken in creation: 1. GENERATE was used to create a 7.5 minute grid covering the state of Georgia in a geographic projection with a datum of NAD27. The grid size was 0.125 degrees. 2. In Arcedit the GRAIN was set to 0.00625 and DENSIFY was run to place additional vertices making each quad size have 20 equally sized arc segments. 3. This coverage was then projected to an albers projection with standard parallels of 29.5 degrees and 45.5 degrees, central meridian of -83.5 degrees, longitude of origin of 23 degrees, no false easting or northing, and a datum of NAD27. 4. The Albers coverage was then edited in Arcedit to remove all polygon labels from it and the polygon labels from an older quadrangle coverage were inserted. This older coverage was of uncertain origin in the geographical extent of the quadrangle boundaries, but the attribute data had been checked by Jonathan Musser, Eric Steinnagel, Martin Leckie, and Allison Dvorak. These labels had the attributes of NAME and COVERNAME already, as described in the attribute overview. 5. All polygons that had an empty NAME attribute were deleted in Arcedit to create a coverage of just the quadrangles that wholly or partially contain the state of Georgia. 6. CENTROIDLABELS was run on the coverage to move the labels to the exact center of the quadrangle. 7. The item QUAD100 was added and attributed as described in the attribute overview. 8. The four tics that were created in the GENERATE were deleted and new tics on the quadrangle corners were created. The new tics were created by projecting the coverage back to geographic and running NODEPOINT on it to create a coverage of points at the quadrangle corners. POINTTIC was then run on this coveage to create tics on the corners. Then within INFO the .tic file was sorted decending on YTIC and ascending on XTIC and then the IDTIC was calc-ed to the value of $RECNO. This created a numbering scheme of left to right and top to bottom for the tics. These new tics were then projected back to albers and then inserted into the quad24 coverage with Arcedit. 9. The coverage quad24 was documented. 10. Fuzzy tolerance was set to 1.0 and polygon IDs were renumbered to be sequential. Revisions 1.0 original coverage 2/3/98 The quad name "DUPONT" was corrected to "DU PONT" Reviews_Applied The original values for NAME was checked by the four people listed in Procedures. Colleague review October 31, 1997 by Jack Alhadeff and Diane Burgoon Digital data was reviewed with respect to positional accuracy, contextual accuracy, attribute accuracy, topological consistency, and metadata content. 1. Check attribute accuracy statements. Done. 2. Check some spelling errors. Done. Approved by District Chief, Tim Hale, on November 3, 1997. NAME is the name given for each quadrangle in the Index to Topographic and other Map Coverage for the state of Georgia, published by the U.S. Geological Survey. Where the abbreviations "St." and "Mtn." were given, the value for NAME was unabbreviated to "Saint" and "Mountain". In cases where a quadrangle that is completely in Georgia has the same name as a quadrangle that overlaps another state, then the two letter abbreviation for that other state is appended to the value of NAME. COVERNAME is an attribute for naming Arc/Info geodatasets. The value for NAME has been converted to lowercase and spaces changed to underscores. Since there is a limit of thirteen characters for geodataset names, the directional names "north", "south", "east", and "west" were shortened to "n", "s", "e", and "w" respectively. This also applies to secondary directional names such as "northwest" being shortened to "nw". If the COVERNAME was still longer than thirteen characters, then it was shortened to thirteen by dropping characters from the end. If directional modifiers were on the end of the name then characters in front of these modifiers were dropped. For example "CUMBERLAND ISLAND NORTH" went to "cumberland_island_n" and then became "cumberland__n". The final attribute is QUAD100 which is the name of the 1:100,000 30x60 minute quadrangle which the 1:24,000 quadrangle is part of.
