Publication_Date: October 1996 Title: Contours of Georgia Edition: 1.1 1.2 Datum change from 1927 to 1983 (North American Datum of 1983) Data Re-projected using North American Datum (NAD83) - September 2000 Series_Information Series_Name: Digital Data Series Publication_Information Publication_Place: Atlanta, GA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://csat.er.usgs.gov/statewide/layers/contours.html Description Abstract Digital line graph (DLG) data are digital representations of cartographic information. DLGs of map features are converted to digital form from maps and related sources. Intermediate-scale DLG data are derived from USGS 1:100,000-scale 30- by 60-minute quadrangle maps. If these maps are not available, Bureau of Land Management planimetric maps at a scale of 1: 100,000 are used. Intermediate-scale DLGs are sold in five categories: (1) Public Land Survey System; (2) boundaries (3) transportation; (4) hydrography; and (5) hypsography. All DLG data distributed by the USGS are DLG - Level 3 (DLG-3), which means the data contain a full range of attribute codes, have full topological structuring, and have passed certain quality-control checks. This layer is hypsography or contours. Purpose DLGs depict information about geographic features on or near the surface of the Earth, terrain, and political and administrative units. These data were collected as part of the National Mapping Program. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used 1. All of the 1:100,000 optional format hypsography DLGs were obtained from the EROS Data Center "edcftp.cr.usgs.gov". 2. The 4 files for each half quadrangle were gunzipped and had "dd if=infile of=outfile ibs=8000 cbs=80 conv=unbock" run on them to create record delimiters. 3. The rest of the processing takes place using Arc/Info with the first step being to run DLGARC on every DLG file to convert it to a coverage. 4. The 8 different coverages for each 1:100,000 quadrangle were built as a line coverage and the acode file was joined to the aat file with JOINITEM. 5. Each coverage was checked to make sure it had 9 major/minor pairs and if it did not, then the major/minor pairs were added with ADDITEM. 6. The 8 different parts were APPENDed to create one coverage for each 1:100,000 quadrangle. 7. An item ELEV was added to the aat and a simple Info program was run to select the highest elevation value for each arc and place that value in the ELEV field. 8. In Arcedit all neatlines, arcs with a MAJOR1 value of 0 or -99999 were selected and deleted and the the quad coverages were rebuilt as line coverages. 9. In Arcedit all attribute value were checked and any that had a MAJOR value of 0 had the value of that and its associated MINOR value changed to -99999 to signify no value. 10. PROJECTDEFINE was used to add a datum of NAD27 to the projection description. 11. Each quad was projected from UTM zone 16 or 17 to an Albers projection with units in meters, a NAD27 datum, a CLARKE1866 spheroid, and the following parameters: 1st standard parallel 29 30 00 2nd standard parallel 45 30 00 central meridian -83 30 00 latitude of origin 23 00 00 false easting 0 false northing 0 12. Each quad was inserted into an Arc/Info Library with a tiling structure of 1:100,000 quadrangles. 13. A clean with the line option, a dangle length of 3 and a fuzzy tolerance of 6 was run to eliminate contour overlaps from different quad parts that didn't meet exactly right. 14. Each 1:100,000 quad coverage was then inserted into an Arc/Info Library with a tiling structure of the counties. 15. A clean with the line option, a dangle length of 2 and a fuzzy tolerance of 2 was run to eliminate contour overlaps from different 1:100,000 quads that didn't meet exactly right. 16. The final coverage was extracted from the state of Georgia library using a dissolve option to create the contours of Georgia. 17. The coverage was documented using DOCUMENT v7.0.4. 18. The existing tics were all deleted and new tics at 1 degree interval were inserted into the coverage. 19. All major and minor code pairs were dropped using DROPITEM. Revisions 1.0 1.1 The processing steps were changed by inserting two sets of "clean" coverages and placing the contours in a Library of Georgia prior to extraction. Reviews_Applied_to_Data The coverage was visually checked to make sure that no 1:100,000 quadrangle was left out. A frequency was run on all the data fields to make sure that there was no misattribution. Colleague review July 29, 1996 by Thomas R (Bob) Dyar and S. Jack Alhadeff. Digital data was reviewed with respect to positional accuracy, contextual accuracy, attribute accuracy, topological consistency, and metadata content. Documentation updated July 29, 1996. Common set of tics used with coverage. Approved by Georgia District Chief, Tim Hale, on July 29, 1996. Changes approved by S. Jack Alhadeff, on October 17, 1996. Positional_Accuracy Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: For Digital Revision Status = Not revised: Horizontal positional accuracy is based upon the use of USGS source quadrangles which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 0.02 inches of the true position. The digital data are estimated to contain a horizontal positional error of less than or equal to 0.003 inches standard error in the two component directions relative to the source quadrangle. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to assess digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibility constraints. Digital map elements require edge alignment between data sets. Data along each partitioned edge internal to the original 100,000 scale quadrangle, and data along the quadrangle edge, are tested against the adjacent data set using PROSYS; tests check for positional accuracy between data sets within a 0.02 inches tolerance. Features with like dimensionality, and with or without like attribution, that are within the tolerance are adjusted by moving the feature equally in both data sets. Features outside the tolerance are not moved. All disconnects are identified by edge matching flags that document the mismatch. For Digital Revision Status = Limited Update or Standard Update: This file has undergone digital revision. Accuracy of these digital data meets the class 1 positional accuracy specifications in the draft United States National Cartographic Standards for Spatial Accuracy. Digital map elements require edge alignment between data sets. Data along each partitioned edge internal to the original 100,000 scale quadrangle, and data along the quadrangle edge, are tested against the adjacent data set using the USGS Production System (PROSYS); tests check for positional accuracy between data sets within a 0.02 inches tolerance. Features outside the tolerance are not moved. All disconnects are identified by edge matching flags that document the mismatch. Entity_and_Attribute_Overview DLG3 attribute codes are used to describe the physical and cultural characteristics of DLG node, line, and area elements. Attribute codes are used to reduce redundant information, provide enough reference information to support integration with larger data base, and describe the relationships between cartographic elements. Traditional DLG major and minor code pairs have been dropped and replaced with a single item, ELEV (elevation), which has been coded with the highest elevation value for the each arc (derived by checking the original major and minor code pairs). Approximately 40 megabytes of storage was saved by dropping the major and minor code pairs.
