Geology

Description

This database delineates mapped geologic units for the state of Georgia (compiled on a scale of 1:500,000). The map compilation was published by the Georgia Geologic Survey in 1976 as the Geologic Map of Georgia. The majority of rock units were mapped by reconnaissance methods during the year 1973 and represent over 15 man-years of effort. In some areas the more detailed work of previous authors has been included. In these areas the original authors' geologic units were field checked in 1973, and their designations were changed to conform to the general descriptions used in the reconnaissance mapping. The geologic unit descriptions are based on field observations and outcrop or hand specimen identification of rock types. Groupings of rock types within units are based on relative percentages estimated in the field.
